River Dunes is “Best of the Best”

The summer issue of Ideal Living magazine features a list of “Best of the Best” planned communities that offer the finest amenities and facilities.  River Dunes is proud to have been voted “Best of the Best Boating Communities” by readers and editors of the magazine.  Hundreds of nominations were submitted to ideal-LIVING earlier this year.  A special editorial committee assembled by the publication reviewed the qualifications of each nominee and selected the winners. We know that our waterfront community and world-class marina create a unique place for us among other communities in the Southeast, so we are honored to receive the recognition.  We welcome you to come for a visit and find out why we are consistently rated 5-Star for our homes, accommodations, and coastal lifestyle!  Call 800-975-9565 to find out more about our guest cottages and waterfront properties.

Rainbow over River Dunes

Last week, we experienced some rain showers one day.  One of our River Dunes friends snapped these beautiful photos and generously shared them with us.  It’s true that every dark cloud has a silver lining; but, we’re wondering where the pot of gold at the end of this rainbow can be found?

The Adrian Duke Project Concert

Provision Co. Filling the Shelves

The shelves are beginning to fill up with all sorts of goodies at Grace Harbor Provision Company!  Located just across the street from the Harbor Club, the Provision Company will offer residents, guests and boaters all kinds of merchandise and supplies.  Kari Hammond, who has been in charge of the provisioning, states that there are many wonderful products in stock and on the way, and that the team has made locally and North Carolina sourced items a number one priority.  From North Carolina apple butter to gourmet frozen dinners from Ladyfingers, Maui Jim sunglasses, and River Dunes apparel, the Provision Company merchandise has been carefully chosen for quality, taste and appeal.  As the merchandise arrives, it is stocked on custom built shelves and displays.  A full opening is planned for Memorial Day Weekend.

Wimbledon Player visits River Dunes

Another exciting day at River Dunes, as Association of Tennis Players and International Tennis Federation member Tim Wilkison was here this afternoon, serving and volleying with Linda Abercrombie, a resident and terrific tennis player, and Wilkison’s sister, Bonnie, who lives in Oriental.  Wilkison really seemed to enjoy the location, and stated that the courts were in good shape.  It was a thrill to have him here, and we hope that his visit will lead to future clinics and the growth of the tennis program at River Dunes!

Wilkison was the No. 1 ranked junior in the United States and played on the tour for over 25 years. The left-hander won 6 singles titles, 9 doubles championships and reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 23 in September 1986. Wilkison is perhaps best known for his diving volleys at Wimbledon that earned him the nickname “Dr. Dirt”.  In his playing career, Wilkison had victories over Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith, Roscoe Tanner, Guillermo Vilas, Yannick Noah, Boris Becker, Jim Courier, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras.  His best Grand Slam singles result came at the 1986 US Open where he reached the quarterfinals, losing to Stefan Edberg in straight sets. Wilkison has stated that his preferred surface is clay.

Welcome New Neighbors

Please welcome our new River Dunes residents, Thomas and Quidley.  These baby great horned owlets and their mother were photographed in River Dunes by Greg Perry, who lives on nearby Brown Creek.  Greg does a fantastic job of photographing our feathered friends and has taken lots of shots in and around River Dunes.  You can see more of his amazing work at his website  The beautiful osprey building its nest (below) was taken just off the Wild home on Soundside Drive.

River Dunes Residents Adopt a Highway

This past weekend, a number of River Dunes residents turned out for the first of two annual Clean Up Days on Orchard Creek Road.  The residents have officially adopted Orchard Creek Road as part of the North Carolina Adopt-A-Highway program.  Bright orange vests, gloves, boots and pick-up tools were the dress of the day, as residents and River Dunes staff members picked up many bags of litter and left the roadway in much better shape than they found it.  Thanks to all who participated in a campaign that helps keep the neighborhood clean and provides a much-improved entrance to our community!
