In Sardinia, French and Italian archaeologists have found bread baked over 7,000 years ago. The word pizza itself was first documented in 997 A.D. in Gaeta, Italy where many variety of flat breads including the focaccia were enjoyed.

In Naples, Italy 1889, Raffaele Esposito was charged with making a special pizza for Queen Margherita. In an effort to make a pizza worthy of his royal request Esposito crafted something experimental and patriotic. A pizza emblazoned with the colors of the Italian Flag. He did so by using basil, mozzarella, & tomato; thus creating what would be called the margherita pizza.
