There are certain plants that just have a natural association with gardening in the South: magnolias, azaleas, camellias, and, of course, hydrangeas.
In previous generations, and even now, it could be hard to find a southern home without a big bush of puffy, beautiful hydrangea blooms by the front door. The color of the blooms are decided by the pH of the soil and range from white to blue to the bright pink that you see in the cottage courtyard. Regardless of the color, each hydrangea bloom is a quintessential emblem of southern heritage.
