The ponies by the Caretaker’s Cottage are some of the longest-standing members of the River Dunes family. When they first came to River Dunes there were only three and they were unnamed. Their first caregiver named them after characters from her favorite Soap Opera: Veronica, Hedy, and Harry. Harry was originally named Dirty Harry but Darlene, their current caretaker, prefers that he be called Handsome Harry as she believes that is a better fit. Not long after Veronica arrived she surprised everyone by giving birth; that’s where she earned her nickname of “Momma” and we gained Duner! The ponies are fed grain by Darlene each morning, but she is so connected to them that she checks on them multiple times a day. They love apples and carrots but the best treat to give them, if you ever want to stop by and pay them a visit, are unsalted peanuts in the shell. Yes, you read that correctly; elephants are not the only majestic creatures that enjoy a good, raw peanut!
