North Carolina Seafood Festival

September 30 - October 2, 2016

From its beginning in 1987, The NC Seafood Festival has called the beautiful Morehead City Waterfront, located on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina home. Today, the Festival hosts hundreds of thousands of locals and visitors for a weekend of all things “Seafood” and “Sea-Fun”, the first full weekend in October.

The rich cultural traditions of eastern North Carolina come together with music, craftsmen, artists, storytellers and more. Boat builders, net hangers, crab pot makers, quilters, decoy carvers, oar makers and more will share their crafts of yesterday and today. This time offers us all the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with policy makers, commercial fishermen, seafood specialists and educators as we strive to work together to preserve North Carolina’s seafood industry.

Visit the NC Seafood Festival this year and we know you won’t go away hungry. From traditional “Down East” Clam Chowder, Shrimp Burgers and Charcoal Mullet to Sea Urchin on a stick, Calamari and Marinated Eel – all are available for you to sample during the Festival. Friday night starts with a Habitat for Humanity Fish Fry. Saturday and Sunday feature nearly 100 individual booths sponsored by restaurants, civic organizations, school groups and churches all featuring their own interpretation of the best North Carolina has to offer from the bounty of the sea.

It’s Drum Fishing Time!

August 17 - September 30, 2016

The month of August means the arrival of one of the most exciting and challenging times for anglers in the waters around River Dunes – Big Drum season. These giant granddaddy fish move closer to shore from the deeper waters to feed and spawn. The larvae then spend their first winter in the waters of the sounds and estuaries; by spring, they grow rapidly and join their larger relatives out in the deeper waters.

Fishing for the Big Drum occurs at sunrise and sunset, making for a great evening out on the water. Bait consists of chunks of mullet or shad – every guide has his own preference – but all agree that the bait has to be fresh. Some use a chum mix of menhaden and dry cat food – a really aromatic way to attract the big ones.

The largest drum on record was caught in Pamlico Sound – a whopping 94 pounds. To schedule a guided Drum fishing adventure, call River Dunes at 800-975-9565 or email info@riverdunes.com.

Windmill Regatta

July 14 - 17, 2016

In keeping with the tradition of great sailing in this area, River Dunes is proud to host the 2016 Windmill Nationals in Grace Harbor July 14 through 17.  Races will begin on Friday, July 15 at 10:30 a.m. and conclude on Sunday, July 17 at 9:00 a.m.  There are 24 of these fast sailboats signed up for the race, and the race is being officiated by the Oriental Dinghy Club.  The Windmill is a 15.5′, two person racing dinghy designed by boat-builder Clark Mills in 1953. Having designed the Optimist Pram in 1947, Clark saw a need for a two person high performance dinghy that could be inexpensively constructed by amateur builders.  The class has evolved with the times to allow fiberglass construction and aluminum spars, yet both wooden and fiberglass Windmills remain equally competitive.  The Windmill is a born racer – its narrow hard-chined planing hull provides hight performance.  As a non-trapeze, non-spinnaker boat, the Windmill is accessible to a wide range of sailing skills.
