ArtWalk and ARTcrawl are a fun, casual celebration of art and community in downtown New Bern, held every second Friday of each month (yes, even in winter!). It begins at 5 p.m. and usually goes till 8 p.m.–but on warm summer nights, it has been known to go on until 10 o’clock. You’re invited to stroll along the sidewalks, drop in on shops and galleries, and dine at one of many fine restaurants and lively taverns on your way.

Palace Pours: Pumpkin and Pies

November 8, 2017

While attendees imbibe a selection of pumpkin beers, mulled wine, and hard ciders the November Palace Pours will feature a historic cooking demonstration. A costumed interpreter will lead a discussion about historical cooking and the holiday season, while also discussing historical beverages, drinking games and more.
The beverages featured during this Palace Pours are being determined.

Svetlana and the Delancey Five Musical Performance

Playing hard swinging 1920s-40s jazz standards as well as charismatic originals, and featuring Svetlana’s “fine and graceful” (Jazzlives) vocals backed by the band members’ harmonizing and virtuoso instrumentals – their tunes are so infectious, they’ll steal your heart and sweep you off your feet!

MumFest 2017

October 14 - 15, 2017

MumFest is a combination of family fun, entertainment, attractions, exhibitors and great food in the beautifully restored setting of historic downtown New Bern and its waterfront. More than 100,000 festival-goers enjoyed Mumfestivities in 2016. And, MumFest 2017 promises to be another fabulous fun-filled fall weekend!  So be sure to mark your calendar for October 14-15!

MumFest is one of the finest award-winning festivals in the state of North Carolina. It is recognized statewide as a major eastern North Carolina family festival and has received numerous awards over the years to include Best NC Main Street Downtown Event, Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 October events, and the Sun Journal Reader’s Choice winner as Best Festival for many years running. Behind the Scenes at Tryon Palace: Gardens

Tryon Palace gardeners will meet guests at the Waystation to view what is blooming in the 16 acres of Tryon Palace Gardens.
During tours of the palace gardens, visitors will discover what is in bloom this spring, learn about specific plants and design techniques, see the vegetables served on the governor’s table this season, and take a behind-the-scenes peek into the nursery yard.
Tours also include information on the Waystation cistern project, garden weddings, privy and parterre gardens, and the use of produce in the kitchen garden. Behind-the-scenes garden tours include access to all gardens, including the Green, Latham, Wilderness, Kellenberger, and Kitchen gardens.

Tour begins and ends at Palace Gates.
Admission: $6 adults, $3 youth

Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride 2017

Bike MS is back in New Bern celebrating our 29th annual year!

Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride 2017 is a ride that will take you farther than you’ve ever gone before. What makes this ride so special? There are multiple route options, all of which are well supported by a fully-stocked rest stops every 10-15 miles, a great lunch stop each day and safety provided by medical personnel, HAM radio operators, law enforcement and motorcycle escorts. Once you’ve gotten your miles in, you can celebrate with your teammates, friends, and family in our vibrant and scenic water-front Team Village and Start/Finish Festival area!
In addition, you’ll experience an incredible level of camaraderie as you embark on a journey filled with laughter, excitement, support and a profound sense of accomplishment. Your participation will drive MS research forward faster and deliver programs and services to those who face the challenges of MS
every day.

10th Annual Chili Cookoff – Oriental

Here’s a voting experience where you get to try a lot of chili and help the Old Theater raise funds. The 10th Annual Chili Cookoff is Saturday, Oct 28, 2017 from 11a-1:30p at the Oriental Marina & Inn on the harbor in Oriental. Awards at 2p.

It works like this: A dozen or so chefs bring their best chili, you buy a ticket, sample them and then vote for who you think should win the People’s Choice Award. Local restaurants provide the chili for the competition. (There’s also the Judge’s Pick, determined by a trio of judges.) Tix: $10. All proceeds go to support The Old Theater, a non-profit organization.

Emphasis will be on fall warblers returning to the tropics, along with ducks and waterfowl returning to our waterways. Pauline Sterin will be the instructor. Registration for this October class begins Wednesday August 9. Update: the fall class has fillled up. There is a waiting list. April Verch Band: Pamlico Musical Society

September 16, 2017

Pamlico Musical Society opens its 20th season on September 16 with a performance by The April Verch Band at 7:30p at the Old Theater Sat night. It’ll be a return performance in Oriental for the Canadian fiddler, singer and step dancer. Tickets are $22 and on sale now at Nautical Wheelers and at www.pamlicomusic.org.

Earlier that afternoon, at 2:30p, April Verch will also present a jamboree outreach at Pamlico Community College – it’s free and open to the public, including those who want to bring an instrument and jam. (Bringing just a chair is fine too. ) For more details, click here.
